The Return of a Classic: Restored Whirligig Finds Its Home at Johnston Medical Mall

A piece of North Carolina’s rich folk art history has been brought back to life! The Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park & Museum conservation team has completed the restoration of the beloved whirligig at Johnston Medical Mall, originally crafted by the late Vollis Simpson. This vibrant kinetic sculpture now stands proudly once again, spinning with the wind and captivating all who pass by.

A Journey Through Time

This whirligig has a special story. It was gifted to Johnston Health in 2009 by Princeton High School after a memorable visit to Vollis Simpson’s legendary whirligig farm. Led by honors art teacher Judy Boyette, students explored the intersection of wind energy and art, witnessing firsthand Simpson’s unparalleled craftsmanship. At 92 years old, Simpson created this unique masterpiece for the class, who then, years later, generously donated it to the medical mall for the community to enjoy.

As part of the project, Judy Boyette wrote a $500 grant focused on wind power, using Vollis Simpson’s whirligigs to illustrate its potential. After securing the grant, she took her students to Simpson’s shop, where they marveled at his “big barn of stuff.” Some students had already seen his work at night, captivated by the glowing reflectors. During
the visit, Simpson even autographed a metal piece they found on the barn’s dirt floor.

The whirligig was stored outside on campus, leaving it to the elements over the years. Recognizing an opportunity to give it a proper home, Judy arranged for its donation to UNC Health Johnston, where it would be appreciated by a wider audience. The Johnston Medical Mall, formerly a textile plant with deep roots in Smithfield’s history,
became the perfect setting.

The Restoration Process

After years of exposure to the elements, the whirligig needed expert care. The skilled conservation team at the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park & Museum took on the challenge, replacing worn bearings, sanding down surfaces, and applying fresh coats of paint to match Simpson’s original design. Their meticulous work ensures that the whirligig remains a lasting tribute to the visionary folk artist.

A Legacy Preserved

Thanks to the dedication of the conservation team, this restored whirligig continues to celebrate the ingenuity and artistry of Vollis Simpson. It stands as a reminder of the power of public art to inspire, connect, and endure.

Be sure to visit Johnston Medical Mall, in Smithfield, NC to see this beautifully restored piece in motion—and take a moment to appreciate the artistry and history that makes it so special!
