Whirligig Park Shines Blue for Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to bring awareness to the importance of protecting children and supporting victims of abuse. This year, Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park is partnering with Wilson DSS and Children’s Advocacy Centers of North Carolina (CACNC) to help shine a light on this critical issue. Throughout the month, the park’s pavilion will be illuminated in blue each evening, and blue pinwheels—symbolizing hope and a brighter future for children—will be on display, provided by Wilson DSS.

A Park for Families, A Commitment to Safety

As a beloved gathering place for families, children, and school groups, the Whirligig Park is more than just a destination—it’s a space where the community comes together to learn, play, and connect. Whether it’s through family outings, educational field trips, or community events, the park is committed to fostering a safe and welcoming environment for all. That’s why supporting Child Abuse Prevention Month is so important.

“Whirligig Park is a place where families come together, where children explore, and where we welcome school groups for field trips and educational experiences. As a hub for community connection, we believe it’s crucial to use our platform to raise awareness about child abuse prevention,” says park leadership. “By lighting the pavilion blue and displaying pinwheels, we hope to not only honor Child Abuse Prevention Month but also to spark important conversations about how we can all play a role in protecting children.”

Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse

The first step in helping victims of child abuse is recognizing the signs and knowing how to report concerns. CACNC’s “Hidden in Plain Sight” campaign aims to educate communities about the symptoms of child abuse and empower individuals to take action. According to North Carolina law (N.C.G.S 7B-301 and N.C.G.S. 14-318.6), every adult in the state is a mandated reporter of suspected child abuse. If you suspect that a child is being harmed, it’s important to report it immediately.

Wilson DSS provides child protective services to ensure the safety and well-being of children in the community. Reports of suspected abuse or neglect can be made by calling Wilson County DSS at 252-206-4000 during business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM). After hours, weekends, and holidays, call 911. Reports can be made anonymously.

Statewide Effort

The Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park joins other locations across North Carolina in raising awareness by “going blue” this April. Other sites include:

  • Rocky Mount Mills Tower

  • The Durham Bulls Stadium (lit blue for all home games in April)

  • WRAL News Fountain in Raleigh

On Children’s Advocacy Center Day – April 28 – communities will unite in a collective show of support for child abuse victims.

How You Can Help

Beyond visiting the park and seeing the blue lights and pinwheels, there are many ways individuals can get involved in preventing child abuse:

  • Educate yourself on the signs and symptoms of child abuse.

  • Learn about local CACs and the resources they provide to child abuse victims and their families.

  • Advocate for children by spreading awareness and supporting organizations like CACNC and Wilson DSS.

  • Report any concerns to the appropriate authorities.

Child Abuse Prevention Month serves as a reminder that protecting children is a responsibility we all share. By standing together as a community, we can make a difference in the lives of children and create a safer, more supportive world for them to thrive.
